About Me

My name is Anthony Adu.

I was born and raised on the luscious coast of Ghana, West Africa. I immigrated to the United States in 2009, spending the latter part of my formative years in Aurora, Colorado. Like any Ghanaian child, I had only three choices for a career: doctor, lawyer, or engineer. But in high school, I sneakily pursued art through Speech competitions. During my junior year, a judge at a tournament encouraged me to pursue a career on Broadway. I had no idea what Broadway was, but I went home and looked it up. In the span of a night, it became clear that acting was my path. I haven't looked back since.

I began my professional acting career as an inaugural member of Arvada Center's Black Box Repertory Company. I have since worked in major regional companies including South Coast Repertory, La Jolla Playhouse, Chautauqua Theatre Company, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, and Denver Center for the Performing Arts. I recently earned my MFA in Acting from UC San Diego and moved to Los Angeles to pursue film/television.

____

I aim to inspire and plant seeds of joy, vulnerability, resilience, and hope in young queer, Ghanaian (African) children. I want them to know that in spite of the hardship, pain, and injustice that this world throws at them, they can dare to live a life beyond their wildest dreams. I am passionate about my heritage, my relationship to being a Ghanaian as it's tied to being American (by passport), my queerness. I seek to tell stories that reveal the vast, deep culture that runs in my blood. I am also inspired by stories of people who are trying to find a place to call home. My greatest influences are Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan, Lupita Nyongo'o, Michaela Coel, Viola Davis, my fierce Mother, and anyone who dares to dream.

In my free time, you can catch me on the mat practicing yoga or in the kitchen, experimenting with food. I want to create my own cookbook one day, full of Ghanaian food. My passion extends into fitness, reading, and a love for teaching and coaching.
